Giveaway: The Spark Solution

The best part about last summer was getting to work with my friend Stepf Romine.

Stepf, if you don’t know her, is the editor at SparkPeople. I’ve known her since she wrote the food blog for the Enquirer back in 2007, and we’ve stayed in touch while she’s written cookbooks and generally rocked out at SparkPeople. If you aren’t familiar with SparkPeople, it’s the biggest weight loss website in the country, and they take a healthy approach: moderation, tracking, accountability. I’ve used it in the past to lose 30 pounds, and I’m using it again (I’ve already shed 15 since the first of the year!). It’s based here in Cincinnati.

Stepf and I spent a good portion of the summer in my kitchen, with Meg Galvin and Becky Hand cooking and Catherine from Photo Kitchen and the whole team from Plum Street shooting. If you’ve seen any of the Spark Coach videos, that’s my kitchen. I mainly stayed out of the way, honestly, but it was fun to have delicious food smells floating up to my office (and making sure the cats didn’t cause a ruckus during filming).

The videos have been out for a while, but the book just came out a couple of weeks ago, and it’s great. Even if you don’t want to lose weight, or have your own method for doing so, the recipes are fantastic– I can attest that the fish tacos are fabulous, and the photography is beautiful as well.

I preordered a copy, and the lovely Stepf sent me one as well. I don’t need two, so you can win a copy! Lucky you.

Just comment here and mention your favorite healthy recipe, and I’ll pick a random name to win on Tuesday at noon. Sound good?

(Open to residents of the US 18 years of age or older. The winner will be chosen via

  • Oh, Julie, you’re so kind! I had so much fun. It’s hard to call what we do “work.” I had such fun working with you in your lovely home. Thanks for hosting this!

  • I love to make a healthy pilaf with quinoa and whatever veggies I have in the fridge. Throw it all in a pot with 2x water as quinoa and I’ve got a healthy meal in 20 minutes. If I need some protein, I’ll throw in a can of chicken or some firm tofu.

  • Fun! The first thing that came to mind is a salad we make with spinach, dried cherries, feta (or blue) cheese, toasted pecans, and Brianna’s Blush Wine Vinaigrette. It’s so, so good. Thanks!!

  • Spinach, strawberries, feta cheese, almonds, and a balsamic vinagrette I make with mission fig balsamic vinegar

  • At the moment one of my favorite healthy recipes is Chicken Enchilada Zucchini boats from Skinnytaste! All of the gooey enchilada goodness with fewer carbs and way less fat than other versions. Satisfies our mexican food craving without the guilt. What a great giveaway! I LOVE Sparkpeople and have lost 50 pounds so far using the site…I would love to have this book to add to my arsenal!

  • I love to grill lean pork chops, marinated in lime juice, chili powder, and paprika. Creates a lovely, spicy crust that I can’t get enough of!

  • I just made a simple, delicious batch of summer salsa containing: black beans, corn, tomato, cilantro, red onion, salt, pepper and lime juice. Yum!

  • I love to make green beans (steamed) with fresh dill & homemade mustard vinagrette – just whisk together a good Dijon or other hearty mustard with a little olive oil, salt & pepper & toss with green beans & dill. Pair with grilled shrimp for an easy light dinner.
