wmdm’s Holiday Gift List: Part 3 (and another giveaway!)

This has been the season for some excellent cookbooks coming right out of Ohio!  And the best part?  You can win every book I write about today.  You probably won’t get them in time for Christmas or Hanukkah, but if your new year’s resolution is to cook more, I think I can help.  If you want to buy them as a gift, check out Joseph Beth Booksellers, where all of these books can be found.

DSC_0034First up is a book that’s on a lot of “best of” lists this year– Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams At Home.  Jeni Britton, who started out at Graeter’s here in Cincinnati, is famous nationwide for her creamy, delicious ice creams in some extraordinary flavors.  You can buy them locally, but for the full experience, head up to Short North in Columbus and get one of her sundaes.  What, you don’t want to drive 100 miles?  That’s okay– Jeni has adapted her recipes to the home cook, to be made in any standard home ice cream maker.  Flavors range from basic vanilla to gorgonzola and candied walnuts, and everything in between.  She also tells you how to make sundaes (like my favorite, One Night in Bangkok, which isn’t popular but is Jeni’s favorite, so it stays on the menu.  It is awesome, I assure you.), macaron ice cream sandwiches, and drinks made with ice cream and sorbets.  She also focuses on local, Ohio purveyors, including Snowville Creamery (they stake a claim on most of the cream from their delicious milk).  I’m keeping my eye out on an inexpensive ice cream maker and I’m going to work on some of these recipes once spring comes next year.

DSC_0037The next one on the list is a little healthier– SparkPeople, a locally-based weight loss and healthy lifestyle website, teamed the editor of SparkRecipes, Stepfanie Romine, with local chef Meg Galvin to put together a healthy cookbook that doesn’t rely on artificial sweetener, weird shortcuts, or strange “nonfat” items.  The Sparkpeople Cookbook relies on simple preparation, fresh ingredients, and flavor.  I’ve made a couple of recipes out of this book, most notably an excellent pork tenderloin stuffed with spinach and mushrooms,  and carrot slaw and I have some other recipes marked for future use.  There’s a wide variety of recipes, and the dessert recipes were written by Megan Ketover, of Top Chef and Orchids at the Palm Court.  There are diet tips, too (helpful  for those new years’ resolutions) and Sparkpeople is a fantastic, balanced program. If you’re not near a Joseph-Beth, you can also buy it online on sparkpeople.com.

Last, but not least, is Todd Kelly’s Orchids at Palm Court cookbook.  Kelly and pastry chef Ketover teamed up with local writer Courtney Tsitouris to put together a book that features many signature, favorite dishes from the Palm Court, including the divine blue cheese beignets, porchetta, and  maine lobster salad, all broken down into servings for the home cook.  The photos are gorgeous, and not only feature the food, but some great pictures of Kelly with local purveyors, like Madison’s and Eckerlin’s, as well as interiors of the Palm Court and photos of Kelly, Ketover and their staff in action.  It’s great on your coffee table, but sneak a peek, pick a recipe, and challenge yourself, too.

I’m giving away a copy of each– all three autographed– to one lucky reader.  All you have to do is comment here and tell me what your favorite cookbook is.  Please be sure that your email address has been entered so that I can contact you.
