I love Halloween. Well, mostly I love Fall, and both Thanksgiving and Halloween are huge parts of the fall. I love the candy corn (Brach’s Caramel Apple is my favorite), dressing up, and of course, entertaining.
While I’m not having a Halloween party this year, I do plan on making a couple of spooky cocktails. I know, it sounds kind of corny, but we here at Chez WMDM tend towards the corny side when it comes to Halloween.
A few tips:
- I don’t normally go for gimmicky stuff, but Blavod vodka could be a cute addition to a Halloween party. It’s a black vodka! It’s made with black catechu, which is a component of some bitters recipes (it’s a bark). You could float Blavod on top of a drink for a spooky topping, or mix it as you might another vodka. “Dress the Drink” makes some cocktail-related toppings (flavored sugars, “jerkys” made of dehydrated garnishes) and came up with this cocktail (which sounds pretty good):
Rim half of glass with Dress The Drink Tangerine Sugar (or any orange sugar)
Rim other half of glass with Dress The Drink Black Sugar (you could make your own with black food coloring)
Garnish with Dress The Drink Orange Jerky (or your own candied orange peel)
2 oz Sparkling Wine
1 oz Blood Orange Juice
1/4 oz Campari
1/4 oz Simple Syrup
1/2 oz Blavod Vodka
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice, strain into the rimmed cocktail glass.
- Pumpkin and other spicy flavors are great for fall. Why not make a daiquiri or Sidecar with spiced rum?
- Don’t forget Halloween-named cocktails, like “Death in the Afternoon“, which is an elegant take on Absinthe, or the Corpse Reviver?
