Terry picked these up at Whole Foods the other day (the Mason location, I think, while I was getting a manicure. So girly, I know.). What are they? Hint: if you lived through high school English, you might have read about them.
Scuppernongs! One of summer’s best treats. I can remember many hours spent under my great-Aunt Ruth’s scuppernong arbor, eating the sweet, sticky fruit until we had our fill. Also makes a great ultra-sweet wine.
Barbeque would be good anytime. Especially from Alabama. I have a friend who sent me the phone # for The Top Hat. If I can get them to deliver/Fedex, you and Terry have to come over!
Guess what Kids! Golden Rule will be available online soon. At least the sauce will be. The only Alabama barbecue that I’ve been able to find online that actually ships ribs, etc, is Dreamland, which if you’ve never had, is pretty good.
I know a friend up in West Chester who will be seriously happy about this. He has a cabinet full of Sneaky Pete’s sauce and Golden Flake cheese curls.
I picked up a box of Scuppernongs too. I had never heard of them and was intrigued. I wish I had found your blog before we did our foodie day trip to Cinci – I will consult before the next trip.
Terry – John’s parents brought up a case of Sneaky Pete’s sauce on their last visit. The only online store where I’ve found it to be available is Greatsouth.com, which also offers Ollies and Golden Rule Barbecue Sauce, not to mention the Whistlestop Cafe’s Fried Green Tomato batter mix. Nice!

Are those quince? I think I have about 3 jars of preserved quince in some form in our fridge…. What to do w/ them?

Currants?
Those are gooseberries.
Just from the high school English clue – pomegranates?

No correct answers yet. My fellow Alabamian Terry Lee…are you out there?
They look like very unripe huckleberries? And that fits with the H.S. English hint.

Want me to pick you up a container? I work in Mason, after all. 🙂
YAY Terry Lee! I should get you a prize. Barbecue? 🙂
Some may call them muscadines also.

Oooooh. Now that sounds like fun. I think we’ll be in Anniston sometime in December. We can FedEx back some Golden Rule.

Awesome! I can’t wait to get our fix in December. By then, it’ll have been two years since Terry’s had it. He’s starting to get the shakes.
Did he get the Sneaky Pete’s sauce locally or on the net?

You can get Whistlestop FGT mix at Jungle Jim’s, too– usually next to the green tomatoes, when they’re available!
Great! Thanks Julie!

Oh! Also try http://www.alabamagoods.com
They have gift packs and include Dreamland in the mix.
