Review: Newport Pizza Company

After The Vagina Monologues on Saturday, the cast headed to Mokka/Sunset Grill for drinks (Saturday is Ladies’ Night, $2 wells, drafts, and wine– not bad), and discovered that their kitchen is closed after about 10 PM. No worries– they brought us a menu for Newport Pizza Company, the new pizza place that opened on Monmouth street a few months ago. For the eight of us, we ordered two pies– one pepperoni, and one Zeus, which has fresh basil and tomatoes.

So how is it?


The Zeus was my favorite– both pizzas had the same chewy, handmade crust– very chewy, but not greasy.  Instead of a standard mozzarella, it had asiago and feta, which added some nice saltiness to compliment the sweet tomatoes.  The fresh basil, tomatoes, and garlicky sauce were beautiful together– very light, flavorful and summery.  I can’t help it– I always think of basil when I think of summer.

The pepperoni was next.  This featured a tomato-based sauce, plenty of cheese, and plenty of pepperoni.  Too much, really– though the pepperoni was spicy (very different than LaRosa’s, for example) and delicious, there was just way, way too much grease– several of us had to blot the pepperoni slices.  The flavor was still great, but slightly less pepperoni might have helped the whole experience.


All in all– a huge winner on the pizza front.  I look forward to eating in the restaurant, and trying out a couple of the other pies they offer (the BBQ Chicken looked phenomenal in Veggie Option’s review).
